What Brief Therapy Is & When It’s Used

Brief therapy is a structured form of psychotherapy that focuses on a specific concern over a limited number of sessions. Rather than open-ended treatment, it emphasizes clear goals, practical strategies, and steady progress.

We offer brief therapy because many people benefit from focused support that fits their immediate needs and circumstances. Thus, this approach allows us to address defined concerns thoughtfully and efficiently.

At Equilibrio, brief therapy is provided in conjunction with medication management to help you achieve meaningful improvements in your mental well-being.

Who Benefits from Brief Therapy

Brief therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Want help with a specific emotional or behavioral concern
  • Prefer a structured approach rather than open-ended therapy
  • Want goal-oriented, focused sessions with a clear direction
  • Prefer measurable progress without committing to long-term therapy

Our providers, Sean Dellasperanzo, PMHNP-BC, and Joanne Hudkins, PMHNP, oversee both therapy and medication, which helps keep your care consistent, personalized, and responsive as your needs change.

Sean is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with extensive experience treating a broad range of psychiatric conditions across multiple clinical settings. His work is grounded in careful assessment and individualized treatment planning. Joanne is also board-certified and brings specialized expertise in reproductive psychiatry and women’s mental health, including advanced training in pregnancy and postpartum-related mental health care.

Together, they integrate clinical experience, thoughtful listening, and ongoing monitoring so treatment evolves with your needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all model.

Our Brief Therapy Process

Before Your Appointment

Before your initial session with us, our team starts by asking you to complete a short online intake questionnaire. This helps us gather essential information about your mental health concerns, understand your specific needs, and prepare for a more targeted and effective initial evaluation.

Your Initial Evaluation

Your first session is an in-depth evaluation that lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes. During this visit, our provider will:

  • Clarify the primary concern you want to address
  • Review your mental health history and current symptoms
  • Discuss treatment options, including whether medication may be helpful
  • Collaborate with you on clear goals and expectations

We take the time to understand the full picture of your mental health concerns before recommending a treatment plan.

Ongoing Care and Follow-Ups

Once you start your treatment plan, follow-up appointments will be scheduled at regular intervals. We offer virtual and in-person follow-up sessions to ensure you receive care in a setting that suits you best. Throughout the process, we continuously monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your care plan to help you achieve lasting improvements.

Duration of Brief Therapy

The length of brief therapy depends on the concern you’re addressing, how symptoms evolve, and whether medication is part of your treatment plan. Rather than setting a fixed number of sessions upfront, we adjust the pace of therapy based on your progress and clinical needs.

If you begin a new medication or you are experiencing severe or unstable symptoms, we see you more frequently, sometimes more than once a month. Once you begin seeing improvement, monthly visits are usually sufficient. When your condition is stable, appointments every three months may be appropriate.

Conditions We Treat with Brief Therapy

At Equilibrio, we have used brief therapy successfully to manage a wide range of mental health conditions.

Evidence-Based Approaches We Use

Our providers draw on several well-established therapeutic methods, selecting the approach that best suits your situation. Both in-person and virtual follow-ups are available to support continuity and convenience.

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: This approach, combined with medication, offers a targeted approach to mental health treatment that emphasizes finding practical solutions in a short timeframe. It focuses on your strengths and resources, helping you envision and work towards meaningful, lasting changes in your life.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This form of therapy focuses on identifying and changing your negative thought patterns and behaviors. Through this approach, you may learn to reframe your thinking, manage stress, and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
  • Therapeutic Support for Sleep Issues: For those struggling with insomnia or other sleep-related concerns, we offer specialized therapeutic techniques to help improve sleep patterns and overall sleep quality.
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy: This approach emphasizes managing and transforming emotions to promote personal growth and resolve complex emotional issues. It is particularly effective for addressing deep-seated emotional disorders.
  • Motivational Interviewing: This method is particularly effective for people who may feel uncertain about making changes in their lives. It helps increase motivation by exploring and resolving mixed feelings, allowing you to take action towards your goals.

Advantages of Brief Therapy

At Equilibrio, brief therapy is designed to provide focused, practical support without assuming long-term treatment is always necessary. Our approach centers on clarity, collaboration, and care that fits your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does brief therapy usually last?

Brief therapy typically lasts several weeks to a few months, depending on the concern being addressed and your progress. The timeline is discussed and revisited throughout your care.

Is brief therapy effective?

Brief therapy can be effective for well-defined concerns and specific goals. Effectiveness depends on the condition, the approach used, and your response to treatment.

Can brief therapy be combined with medication?

Yes. At Equilibrio, brief therapy is typically provided in conjunction with medication management. Both are managed by the same provider for continuity of care.

Is brief therapy the same as short-term therapy?

They are similar, but brief therapy at Equilibrio is more structured and goal-driven, with regular review of progress and treatment fit.

What types of concerns are best suited for brief therapy?

Brief therapy is often helpful for anxiety, stress, low mood, sleep difficulties, and challenges related to life transitions. It may also support people who want targeted help with a specific issue rather than ongoing therapy.

Are brief therapy sessions in-person or virtual?

Initial evaluations are conducted in-person. Follow-up brief therapy sessions may be offered in-person or virtually, depending on clinical appropriateness and your schedule.

What happens after brief therapy ends?

If brief therapy meets your goals, our provider may recommend pausing treatment or transitioning to less frequent follow-ups.
